Starred Up
Fox Searchlight has picked up UK rights to David Mackenzie’s prison drama “Starred Up” which opened to strong reviews at Telluride and Toronto.

Jack O’Connell stars as a violent and troubled teenager making the difficult transition from a young offenders’ institute to adult prison. Rupert Friend plays the prison’s unconventional therapist, Mendelsohn is one of the prison’s longest detained inmates. [Source: Screen Daily]

Devil’s Knot
Image Entertainment has acquired Atom Egoyan’s West Memphis Three movie “Devil’s Knot” and are planning a U.S. second-quarter 2014 release.

Reese Witherspoon, Colin Firth, Amy Ryan, Mireille Enos, and Stephen Moyer star in the film which premiered in Toronto. [Source: Deadline]

War and Peace
The Weinstein Company has signed a deal with Lookout Point and BBC Worldwide to partner on Andrew Davies’ ambitious upcoming six-hour event series production of Tolstoy’s “War and Peace”.

TWC will handle distribution of the miniseries in the US, Canada and China. BBC Worldwide will distribute throughout the rest of the world. [Source: Screen Daily]

Burial Rites
Not unexpectedly, Lionsgate is in negotiations to pick up “The Hunger Games” actress Jennifer Lawrence and director Gary Ross’ proposed film adaptation of the Hannah Kent novel “Burial Rites”.

The true story tale is inspired by Agnes Magnúsdottir, one of the last two people executed in Iceland for a murder committed in 1928. The story deals with her final days on an isolated farm awaiting her death. She develops a bond with a priest and eventually the family that houses her. [Source: THR]
