Referred to once or twice and only briefly seen during Rey’s lightsaber flashback, the ‘Knights of Ren’ in “Star Wars: The Force Awakens” remain a fairly enigmatic group – mostly defined only by the film’s villain Kylo Ren who served as their leader.
There are rumors they will appear in “Star Wars: Episode VIII” as well, but this week ‘Force Awakens’ director J.J. Abrams revealed that he thinks their backstory is good enough that they could feature in their own standalone movie. When asked by Collider about what specific “Star Wars” spinoff film he’d like to see, Abrams said:
“I gotta say Kathy Kennedy, who’s running it all, she seems to be pushing all the right buttons. There isn’t something that I’d love to see – I guess the one thing I would say is there’s a Knights of Ren story that I think would be pretty cool to tell.”
The first two “Star Wars” spin-off films are mapped out with a third targeting a 2020 release.
