Abominable Tops A Quiet Box Office

DreamWorks Animation and Pearl Studio’s co-production “Abominable” has not only scored good reviews but is expected to take home around $20 million over its opening weekend at a quiet domestic box-office.

That makes it the biggest opening for an original animated film this year, and the third biggest No. 1 opening for an original film at the North American box office this year (behind only “Us” and “Good Boys”).

Coming in second is “Downton Abbey” which is headed for a $14 million second weekend, and “Hustlers” in third with an $11.6 million haul. “Ad Astra” and “IT: Chapter 2” round out the top five with around $10 million each.

In limited release, Roadside Attraction’s “Judy” ie projected to take around $3 million come Sunday and is garnering awards buzz for Renee Zellweger’s performance.

The overall soft numbers come ahead of this coming Friday’s “Joker” theatrical release with that film expected to dominate the box-office next weekend.
