ABC is teaming with creator Adam F. Goldberg to develop an untitled 1990s-set “The Goldbergs” spinoff series which Sony Pictures Television will produce.
Bryan Callen, who recurs as the 1980s-set flagship show’s high school gym teacher/coach Rick Mellor, is attached to star in the spinoff which centers on two high school teachers who become unlikely father figures to the school secretary’s three misfit kids. It is rumored to take place in Philadelphia.
The new series has landed at ABC with a script commitment and significant penalty attached. Goldberg and Marc Firek are penning the script for the single-camera comedy with Doug Robinson and Seth Gordon set to executive produce.
“The Goldbergs” is currently in its forth season and is averaging a 2.7 among adults 18-49 with seven days of DVR and 8.3 million total viewers.
