Following on from the news yesterday of multiple Marvel limited series being developed for Disney’s streaming service, ABC has announced that they’ve hired “Wonder Woman” writer Allan Heinberg to develop an hour-long drama series expected to focus on an all-female team of Marvel superheroes.
It’s not clear which heroes the show will focus on, but they are expected to be ‘lesser known characters’ and may not be an established team (ala A-Force, Lady Liberators, Fearless Defenders). Heinberg, who has a long history with ABC working on numerous Shondaland series, and Jeph Loeb will executive produce for Marvel TV and ABC Studios.
Launching a new Marvel series has been a priority for ABC with this one emerging as a strong contender right from inception. ABC previously developed “Jessica Jones” before it moved to Netflix, and to date has released three series based on Marvel properties – the long-running “Agents of SHIELD,” the critically well-regarded “Agent Carter,” and the straight dud that was “Inhumans”.
