ABC Family Orders “Mortal Instruments” Series

ABC Family has given a series order for “Shadowhunters,” a new longform TV adaptation of Cassandra Clare’s “The Mortal Instruments” book series.

The story follows eighteen-year-old Clary Fray, who finds out on her birthday that she comes from a long line of Shadowhunters – human-angel hybrids who hunt down demons.

When Clary’s mother Jocelyn is kidnapped, Clary is thrown into the world of demon hunting with mysterious Shadowhunter Jace and her best friend Simon. She soon begins a journey of self-discovery as she learns more about her past and what her future may hold.

This will be the cable channel’s first “saga-to-series” and is scheduled to begin production in May in Toronto. No casting or premiere has yet been set.

The show, which will be produced by Ed Decter (“Helix,” “Unforgettable”), is the second screen adaptation of Clare’s work following the 2013 film “The Mortal Instruments: City of Bones”.
