Last week came a mysterious trailer from arthouse distributor A24, a trailer for an untitled and enigmatic science fiction film. There were no big stars and no hint of anything much beyond a title and some intriguing imagery.
The Film Stage has done some digging and has found the answer – the trailer is for a short film named “Toru” that will soon premiere at the Sundance Film Festival. Jonathan Minard and Scott Rashap helm the fourteen-minute short which is done in the Japanese language but with English subtitles.
The story centers on the story of a baby named Toru, born with a fatal lung condition. With only a few days to live, his parents sign him up for a trial experiment that would simulate a full life in a matter of days.
We then see Toru’s life simulation in which he becomes a boy named Todd growing up in New England and eventually ending in futuristic Japan. Matt Mitchell was the D.O.P. while Brian McComber did the score.
