Following its acquisition last month of Joanna Hogg’s “The Souvenir” which is set to debut at Sundance, distributor A24 has closed a North American rights deal for the film’s sequel – “The Souvenir – Part 2”.
Production on the sequel will kick off this Summer with Hogg writing and directing for Element Pictures/JWH Films. Honor Swinton Byrne, Tilda Swinton, Ariane Labed, Robert Pattinson and Richard Ayoade are all expected to reprise their roles from the first.
The first film follows a quiet film student hosting a film-school cohort party where she meets a mysterious man who days later invites her to a grand hotel and asks to stay with her for a few days.
It’s her first serious love affair and she ignores her friends and borrows large amounts of money from her parents, surrendering to the relationship and her new love’s needs. The story is based on Hogg’s own life experiences.
The first film has its world premiere Sunday at Sundance and will then screen at Berlinale in February.
