In his first major interview in years, Danish director Lars von Trier (“Melancholia,” “Nymphomaniac,” “Antichrist”) has revealed that he is undergoing treatment for drugs and alcohol addiction.
Speaking with Danish newspaper Politiken (via The Guardian), 58-year-old von Trier says he had to drink a bottle of vodka daily to enter an altered state in which he claims he needed to be in order to be creative.
In fact, he says many of his films were written whilst under the influence. Now that he’s clean, he’s worried he will only produce crap: “I don’t know if I can make any more films, and that worries me. There is no creative expression of artistic value that has ever been produced by ex-drunkards and ex-drug addicts. Who the hell would bother with a Rolling Stones without booze or with a Jimi Hendrix without heroin?”
