A TV series adaptation of Martin Scorsese’s Oscar-winning 2006 film “The Departed,” itself a remake of the acclaimed Chinese film trilogy “Infernal Affairs,” is in the works.
Speaking with Collider at DICE 2016, producer Roy Lee says the plan is to take the “Infernal Affairs” & “Departed” basic concept and set it somewhere else:
“The Departed as a concept is amazing. That’s what attracted me to the story, the two moles working on either side of the law, and translating that idea into other settings with new characters, like how Fargo has taken the feel of the Coen Brother’s film. We were having discussions about making Infernal Affairs a television series. A different city, so it’s not anything like The Departed, but essentially The Departed as a TV series.”
Lee says the focus is on determining if this should be a network show or cable series. “Departed” scribe William Monahan floated the idea of a sequel film years ago, suggesting we’d see events before and after that of the original film as well as taking place concurrently but not previously depicted.
