4K Blu-rays look set to hit the market next year. The Blu-ray Disc Association is reportedly most of the way done defining a version of its optical disc technology that can handle high-resolution 4K imagery.
It’s expected to start licensing the technology in the spring or summer of 2015, with the first 4K Blu-ray players arriving in time for Holiday shopping next year according to Victor Matsuda, chairman of the BDA’s global promotions committee.
Along with a jump in resolution tom 1920×1080 to 3840×2160, the new Blu-rays are expected to support higher frame rates, greater color gamuts, better dynamic range and bit depth, and more efficient HEVC/H.265 encoding. Disc capacity could also increase from 50 to 100Gb.
