When it comes to charting the golden age of television, the man who has become the czar of the era is FX Networks CEO John Landgraf who revealed his annual ‘peak TV’ wrap-up summary during his presentation at the Television Critics Association winter press tour on Friday.
Approximately 487 scripted original series aired on television in 2017, up from 455 in 2016. The number of shows on basic cable slipped from 183 in 2016 to 175 in 2017, but was made up for by increases in pay cable (36 > 42), broadcast (146 > 153) and online (90 > 117).
Overall, the number of shows on television has grown by 69% since 2012, and 168% since 2002. Check out an infographic of the study below:
