The two biggest guild awards of the year, and the best early indicators for the top awards at the Oscars, were handed out over the weekend. “Birdman” took the equivalent of the ‘Best Picture’-honor at both the Producer’s Guild of America (PGA) and the Screen Actors Guild (SAG) award shows.
Winners at the PGA were “Birdman” for best picture, “The LEGO Movie” for animated picture, and “Life Itself” for best documentary, “Fargo” for best TV Movie/Mini-Series, “Breaking Bad” for best episodic drama, and “Orange Is The New Black” for best episodic comedy.
At the SAG awards, the ensemble cast of “Birdman” along with Eddie Redmayne (“The Theory Of Everything”), Julianne Moore (“Still Alice”), J.K. Simmons (“Whiplash”) and Patricia Arquette (“Boyhood”) took the film honors.
Also at the SAG awards, “Downton Abbey” and “Orange Is The New Black” won the ensemble awards for drama and comedy. Kevin Spacey (“House of Cards”), Viola Davis (“How To Get Away With Murder”), William H. Macy (“Shameless”), Uzo Aduba (“Orange Is The New Black”), Mark Ruffalo (“The Normal Heart”) and Frances McDormand (“Olive Kitteridge”) took individual honors.
