Bolt, a German Shepherd, has lived his whole life on the set of his action TV show, where he believes he has superpowers. When separated from the studio by accident, he meets Mr. Mittens (actually a female cat) and an oversized, radioactive rabbit named Rhino. Along the way, he learns that he doesn't have superpowers and that the show is not realistic.

- The film was originally titled "American Dog".
- Disney's CGI short Glago's Guest is rumored to be shown before Bolt theatrically.

- Much of the original graphic style of the movie was inspired by the work of Edward Hopper, and techniques such as non-photorealistic rendering (NPR) were to be used to give it a special visual appearance.
- In 2006, after becoming Chief Creative Officer at Disney, John Lasseter along with other directors from Pixar and Disney viewed a couple of early cuts of Bolt. According to Lasseter, Director Chris Sanders was replaced because he resisted the changes that he and the other directors had suggested.
