The IMDb
- Russell Crowe was attached as the lead during pre-production. 20th Century Fox executives wanted to reduce Crowe's salary considerably, in order to appease the film's budget. This decision compelled him to ultimately leave the project.
- Heath Ledger was then set to star in this film, but dropped out to play The Joker in The Dark Knight. Luhrmann ultimately set actor Hugh Jackman for the role.
- Two other titles that he considered for the film were Great Southern Land and Faraway Downs.
- In October 2007, it was also revealed that the set of Faraway Downs had been reconstructed within the studios, presumably for interior footage within the homestead.
- Strickland House is a heritage listed property located in Vaucluse, near Sydney. Strickland House doubled as Darwin's Government House in the film.
- In December 2006, Bowen was chosen as a filming location for a third of the production, portraying the look of Darwin.
- In April, Kununurra was chosen as another location for Australia, this time to serve as Faraway Downs, the homestead owned by Kidman's character.
