The Daily Express recently had an interview with actor Mackenzie Crook about his 'comic relief' style role in the Disney flick - that of scurilous pirate 'Ragetti' whose most distinguishing feature is a wooden eyeball: "Johnny said he would put in a good word for me - I would like to think that he did. This is a cutlass-in-the-teeth, real swashbuckling adventure. It might be the best showcase for my work. A good comic character is Ragetti, so once again I am playing the idiot. There are lots of visual gags where my eye gets popped out". Thanks to Full Bloom & 'SooozleQ'

'Jon Movie Man' has a report from the set of the Johnny Depp mariner adventure flick explaining a picture that went up recently at Orlando Multimedia:

"This is the boat that James Norrington (the villian/hero/villian) is in command of. The filming that was taking place on the boat at the time of the picture being taken of it was young Will (Orlando Bloom's character) is found floating in the ocean amoungst reckage of another ship and is rescued. The ship itself is basically a floating bardge, tugboats have to pull it away from the dock and out to sea and back again. The reason it has large sections missing is to accomidate the camera's/equiptment being braught on board. It's complete with a "rest area" set(a section where the navel officers would go and sleep). But the cast and crew used it - extras basically got paid for 2 days to sleep on set in a hammock. |
- 4th November 2002 -
'Jon Movie Man' has a detailled and VERY SPOILER HEAVY description of a scene towards the end of the film adaptation of the Disney ride. Here's the scoop: "Jack Sparrow is captured and is to be hung for his crimes as a Pirate. He is standing on the gallows with a noose around his neck, with the executioner next to him, and a crowd and British Marines watching the hanging. After a man reads to Jack his crimes, the executioner pulls the lever and the trap door Jack is standing on opens. Just as Jack starts to fall, Orlando Bloom’s character of Will Turner runs in through the crowd and throws his sword just below Jack, it sticks through the trap door and Jack balances on the sword to prevent himself from hanging. Will runs up the stairs of the Gallows, grabs another sword from a Marine, fights with the executioner, who accidently cuts the rope that is holding Jack up. Jack falls, Will beats the executioner, Jack and Will join up, fight marines (big fight sceene), but are surrounded by them with bayonets pointed tword them and… I won’t tell you the rest because I don’t want to reveal further spoilers. As to the pictures that appeared on Coming Attractions for 'Pirates' on October 4th. They are as follows, pictures 1-2 are of the Fort where the first and last scenes of the movie are shot, they contain the gallows where Jack is to be hung. Pics 3-5 are of nothing, this is not a set used piece, even though it’s at the parting lot of the set, it’s not for the film, or any other film for that matter".
- 21st October 2002 -
'Jon Movie Man' was in Long Beach the other day and drops in a set report from the Disney ride adaptation: "The wardrobe for this movie alone is extremely accurate - they have every little nuance of detail in all their hand-sewn costumes. They have tons of wigs that they are using as well. The props for the movie are very accurate, they were putting finishing touches on the cannons and cannon balls. There were at LEAST 45 cannons they they were getting ready. I am also being told that this will be THE most VIOLENT Walt Disney Pictures movie to date and most likely will recieve a PG-13 rating. In one scene that I heard about, one of the pirates describes to a little girl how he will kill her and what he will do to the body".
- 18th October 2002 -
Wordplay talked with writer Terry Rossio who revealed some early stories from the production which is so far on time and budget. There's apparently been a lot of talk about Johnny Depp's teeth as test footage revealed one of his gold/silver teeth was too dark and created a gap effect - it has since been fixed. Johnathan Pryce is in the film in the role of Governer Swann. Comedic characters include Pintel and Ragetti (Ragetti with a wooden eye), and a cursed monkey about which Geoffrey Rush says "Whenever the monkey is on screen, I'm just a large human prop". Three fictional ships are being utilised: the HMS Dauntless (currently under construction in Long Beach), the HMS Interceptor (enroute to the Caribbean), and the Black Pearl (w/ black sails). Thanks to 'Iain'.

IGN FilmForce has just done an in-depth report about Disney's film adaptation of their famous ride. Production begins in October on the Gore Verbinski-helmed project but only two roles have been cast - Johnny Depp as Jack Sparrow and Geoffrey Rush as Captain Blackheart. The story starts in a flashback where a young girl at sea comes upon a young man in the wreckage of a British ship that's just been attacked by the infamous pirate galleon 'The Black Pearl'. Eight years later things get complicated fast as Depp's character rescues the now grown up girl from drowning and is promptly locked up. Soon after the Black Pearl attacks the town and takes the girl hostage, so both the grown up saved boy and Depp attempt to rescue her whilst the girl learns the terrible truth about the curse on the crew of the Black Pearl. For the lengthy synopsis, check out the article. Thanks to 'Brian'.
