FILM NEWS & NOTES:
- 20th May 2003 -
For those missed the link to the neo/architect transcript yesterday, check out TheAntiTrust. Meanwhile actor Marcus Chong (Tank in the 1st movie) has launched a lawsuit, see Reuters for details.
- 19th May 2003 -
The hour of video throughout the "Enter the Matrix" computer game which was written/directed by the Wachowskis and filmed concurrently with the two movies, contains major spoilers for "Revolutions" and some backstory for "Reloaded". 'TwelveStones' has gathered the key juicy info he could find during these video segments and reveals them here - be well aware though that all this includes MAJOR spoilers for Reloaded and Revolutions so don't go shooting the messenger ok. Lets begin:
"The Oracle (played by an actress named Mary Alice, due to Gloria Foster's death; I assume this means that Mary Alice will play the Oracle in Revolutions, as well) states that a "special child" who will "change the world" is the child of two programs similar to herself. If she means Neo, this would suggest that Neo is a program and thus that Zion is still part of the Matrix. The Oracle says the two programs betrayed her for their love by giving Merovingian (the French information-collector guy, played by Lambert Wilson) her termination key. The Oracle allowed this because she wanted the programs to have their special child.
A hobo with longish blond hair who also appears in the Revolutions trailer has a conversation with Niobe (Jada Pinket-Smith) in which he reveals that the Zion before this one "only lasted 72 hours". Niobe volunteered to be the second ship to enter the Matrix and contact the Nebuchadnezzar because her boyfriend, Command Lock revealed to her that he had arranged for her ship, the Logos, to be the only one not to participate in the defense of Zion, in order to protect her, and she was angry. At the end of the events of Reloaded, Niobi and Ghost's hovercraft (Logos) has crashed in an uncharted underground area and they do not know how they will be found and rescued".
- 18th May 2003 -
A transcript of the entire Neo/Architect conversation is already online at Deja.
- 16th May 2003 -
Well despite the divided reaction to the film in critics circles (must admit seeing it a second time I did enjoy it more slightly), the public felt very strongly about the new sequel with records shattering left and right. On its opening Thursday in the US, 'Reloaded' scored a whopping $42.475 million taking, the largest one-day opening in the history of movies and beats previous record holder "Spider-Man" which had $39.4 million. What makes the news even more impressive is that late evening previews on Wednesday night took in an additional $5 million, whilst in comparison to the original 1999's "The Matrix" the opening day of its sequel is nearly ten times that of the original. Now all eyes turn toward the weekend and how well it will go - with some of the fan demand 'burnt off' by Thursday's release, analysts are estimating the Friday to Sunday three day total opening weekend taking will not beat the earth-shattering $114.8 million which "Spider-Man" took, though will beat out the first "Harry Potter" which scored $90.3 million. Estimates will be released in time for Monday's update.
- 15th May 2003 -
The soundtrack and clips from it are up at VH1.
- 13th May 2003 -
Well for those who can't sit through the end credits of 'Reloaded' or finish the computer game, 'James' has details of what you can expect to see in the first 'Revolutions' teaser (I saw it today and can confirm this is accurate). Easily the most distinctive sequence is "Neo and Agent Smith standing in the pouring rain of a dark street...slowmotion shots of them running towards each other whilst along the sidewalks on both sides are hundreds of Smiths all lined up - both proceed to punch each others face at the same time in slow motion then a shot of them both flying back from the punch". There's also shots of people in large robotic construction suits battling machines, gigantic land based machine vehicles, many sentinels and Zion residents fighting back, and finally a "shot of Neo in a room jumping over a flying Agent Smith who flies right at the screen".
- 12th May 2003 -
Various clips from the first sequel are up at Countingdown, whilst Keanu Reeves talked about the possibility of a fourth film to Matrixfans
- 10th May 2003 -
A complete list of the film's end credits are up at Phantastik, whilst some awesome pics of Premiere's four covers for the film are up French Premiere.
- 5th May 2003 -
Hugo Weaving talked with Premiere about his character in the upcoming "Matrix" sequels and gave hint to something happening in the third film: "He's a free agent, if you like, he's unplugged himself and is hiding in the Matrix the same way the Oracle is. His ego's growing, and with that comes the ability to multiply. I think by the end of the third film, he is meant to have populated the whole of the Matrix with himself". An extensive article on the second film with major plot spoilers, US exhibitor reaction and so on is up at Time.Com. Thanks to 'Grendal' & 'Jose'.
- 4th May 2003 -
Yesterday we had the guys, today its the ladies turn as the two babes of this virtual reality talk about Sydney, sequels, sex and the allure of black croc print leather:
- 3rd May 2003 -
Tomorrow we speak to the girls about tight lather, but today its the boys turn as the wise bald man and the ex-surfer dude speak about heading back into a completely artificial world - and I don't mean Burbank:
We see a huge, sprawling shot of Zion, a gigantic cavern with huge stone pillars, walkways and a red lava-like glow to it; Neo stands outside the chateau. He ducks down, the floor ripples just as the walls did at the end of The Matrix. And then boom! He takes off into the sky!; A massive almost nuclear-looking explosion complete with shockwave (definitely inside the Matrix, possibly a city going up); and Morpheus leaps off the back of a car and flying through the air in slow-motion onto the windscreen of an oncoming truck.
For the complete description, click here and you can catch it airing in various places on TV tonight and on the weekend. Quicktime version should be online soon, but about hlf of it is already available at The BBC in poor quality RealVideo.
- 1st May 2003 -
Warners has released around fifty new stills from the first of the sci-fi sequels and there's a sampling at EmpireMovies of the shots which includes lots of pretty sweet visuals. Also, 'Jack In' - the most new footage laden of the commercials is now up at the official site. Thanks to 'Brian' & 'Curtis'.
- 28th April 2003 -
Loads of stuff today so hang on. The 'Twins' Adrian & Neil Rayment spoke with The Last Free City and described their characters origins - "We’re a rogue program. We’ve been given the opportunity - I mean, most out of date programs within the Matrix go back to the main frame and get recycled, but somehow or another, and which you’ll find out, we’ve actually managed to skip that process and are actually roaming of our own free will within the Matrix system. And doing our bidding". The latest issue of Premiere talked with various stars who are in it including the sexy Monica Bellucci who discussed the evil seductress Persephone "It's like she's a vampire. She doesn't have feelings anymore because she comes from an old Matrix, but as soon as she touches you, she feels everything you have inside. That's why she's very dangerous. It's impossible to lie to her because as soon as she touches you, she feels exactly what you feel". Keanu Reeves also talked about that character - "There's a scene where she asks of him [Neo] something very personal...I don't want to give anything away, but she has a desire to experience a feeling she hasn't had, which involves the aspect of love or affection". Reeves also revealed some details about one sequence nicknamed 'Club Hell' we can expect to see in the third film - "The people who are protecting the club fight on the ceiling. Instead of doing that digitally, they had real humans and real rigs to allow people to go from the floor standing up to upside down on the ceiling. I loved that they did that mechanically, four or five people in one shot". FX guru John Gaeta described the third film's tone - "People who like dark creature films, like Ridley Scott used to make, will really get off on this". An awesome billboard ad for 'Reloaded' is also up in New Zealand and here's a pic, plus new TV spots are at Code Matrix. Thanks to 'ObY', 'Wiggo', 'Kailem'.
- 25th April 2003 -
In an official press release, the IMAX coporation has announced that both the sci-fi films will be digitally re-mastered into IMAX form and released in the giant screen format. Unlike other films redone for this format (ala SW2), there won't be any edits or changes to the final print whilst the release is also setting an interesting first - 'Reloaded' will premiere a few weeks after the May 15th theatrical release but 'Revolutions' will be released simultaneously with the theatrical release - the first time ever that a Hollywood live action event film is released concurrently in 35mm and IMAX's format. Thanks to 'Linksys99', 'Zilla', 'Jay' & 'DarkJediJef'.
- 24th April 2003 -
Pics of the international posters are now up on the official site, whilst Empire has four different holo-covers which you can check out at Empire Online. The first music video related to the film is up at Yahoo Launch, whilst the full trailer will be screened in full on Aussie TV during next week's "24".

FilmJerk reports that the Wachowski Brothers have locked in their final cut at a runtime of 138 minutes.
- 4th April 2003 -
The sci-fi sequel is now confirmed to be screening at the Cannes Film Festival. Carrie Ann-Moss and Jada Pinkett-Smith also gave video interviews recently to The BBC.
- 3rd April 2003 -
'Kailem' has some interesting stuff about the new trailer: "The Matrix community forums have been buzzing with talk recently that a new Matrix Reloaded-only trailer would be showing in cinemas from the 11th of this month, which is next friday, attached to 'Anger Mangemen't. This was recently this was confirmed when one of the guys who runs the official Matrix website (and has always been a very reliable source of Matrix info) posted on a community forum saying that the talk of a new trailer was true, and that we would be seeing it online at the official site *before* the 11th". Meanwhile details of the 'gift bags' at the US premiere have emerged and sound somewhat kinky - lifesize blowup Neo and Trinity dolls, black vinyl Trinity oven mittens, and Persephone shaped soap-on-a-rope. Finally a strange new pic of The Twins is now up at The Matrix Fans. Thanks to 'Paul' & 'eric'.
- 31st March 2003 -
Quite a few bits of information have come through today on the sequels. First and most important is a review is now up at Countingdown and its very positive (though with some big spoilers on display). A complete list of the songs on the soundtrack for the sequel is up at the official site and includes such bands as Marilyn Manson, Rob Zombie, Linkin Park, Deftones, Paul Oakenfold, P.O.D. and the Deftones. Meanwhile the first image of Lambert Wilson as Merovingian is now up at MatrixFans - the character is the husband of Persephone (Monica Bellucci) and the so called 'king' of the Matrix (all thanks to his ability to program in any language) who lives in a castle which we've glimpsed several times in the trailers. Finally a trailer for the upcoming game is now up at Enter the Matrix. Thanks to 'Shannon', 'Jediyuth', 'Nasruddin' & 'Mario'
- 27th March 2003 -
The recent edition of the rather superb Hot Dog magazine in the UK has loads of plot spoilers for the new Matrix sequels, here's a breakdown from 'John' of what's been revealed:
The machines aren't all out to destroy humanity - there are 'obsolete' artificial intelligences that are not pleased about having been superceeded (and looked down upon) by more advanced, less humanoid models. We already know that Agent Smith is able to clone himself - but by the end of Revolutions, he won't be the only one with this particular ability.
There is apparently a "wooden performance that stands out from the lot. This person might find their star rising from the immenent success of these movies, but after that . . . I doubt they'll go anywhere - and the final Matrix film finishes in a way that almost demolishes any need for this person to be in it should a further films happen"
- 13th March 2003 -
British show "Film 2003" interviewed the main cast of "The Matrix Reloaded" this week and 'AKJ' was watching, here's some of the details he learned: "Keanu Reeves said that Neo's demeanour in The Matrix has altered, that he owns it now. Hugo Weaving said that Smith is now a free agent and can reproduce (as we witnessed in the superbowl trailer). Laurence Fishburne said that the student (Neo) has now surpassed the teacher, so the teacher becomes the general. Jada Pinkett Smith said that Niobe and Morpheus once had a relationship (vaguely hinted at). But that their journeys become one. Carrie-Anne Moss revealed almost nothing. Though she did say that she had to pause briefly before sitting on a toilet seat from the pain from the choreography. They ended with Joel Silver singing the praises of the upcoming films. He said that is gonna be beyond and will change movies forever".
- 10th March 2003 -
Joel Silver talked with CHUD about the sequels, here's an excerpt about what happens to the Oracle: "We had a terrible thing happen with Aaliyah, too. Well, the boys had always planned on the Oracle changing form, so this was a possibility they had talked about. But she is very well-featured in Reloaded. She has a really great, cool scene in Reloaded. We had not done the Revolutions sequence yet and it ended up being another actor". Any idea what he wants to do next? "I always was fascinated by an old movie called Superfly, which I kind of wanted to play with again. So, we have a plan of making a kind of different kind of version of that". Thanks to 'Smilin Jack Ruby'.
- 7th March 2003 -
Uber-producer and demigod Joel Silver is out promoting the sequels again, this time to The Hollywood Reporter where he talked a bit about the split between the films: "We really thought our audience would not want to wait a year to see the rest of the story because it really stops right in the middle of the movie. We would have loved to come out (with them both in) the same summer, but both of those movies couldn't get done in time. So we went to the fall because we felt that was the best way to do it". WB distribution head Dan Fellman says "The Wachowski Brothers really had one film in mind, only we're going to distribute it in two parts. No. 1 really will be a cliffhanger and No. 2 will pick it up. We intend to show footage or some indication of what's down the road at the end of the (first) movie so the audience will have a good idea of what to look for in November". Thanks to 'Filler'.
- 6th March 2003 -
P.O.D just finished recording "Sleeping Away," the first single from the forthcoming soundtrack according to MTV and Matrix Trilogy Fanpage
- 3rd March 2003 -

- 31st January 2003 -
Studio talked with the beautiful Monica Bellucci who revealed a little about her role of 'Persephone' and more specifically what she gets up to: "I'm among the new characters who appear in the second movie and I have a very small role in the third one. I've got no action scene, well only one in fact, but one very special.... I've known him [Keanu Reeves] on Dracula when I started my carreer. I had only a small role in a sublime erotic scene...almost ten years later I have to make something very big with him - which I can’t spoil, but it's not bad either!". I'm sure there's plenty of fans out there who'd like to make something of Keanu big too. Thanks to The Matrix Fans.
- 30th January 2003 -
Teen Hollywood confirms that Keanu Reeves gave up on a cut of the films' ticket sales in order to help get the film's made - a loss of a potential $20-40 million in income for the actor.
