FILM NEWS & NOTES:

- 23rd May 2003 -
The BBC talked with David Carradine in Cannes yesterday and the veteran actor spoke at length about the new Tarantino movie. The writing style sounds kind of strange - "We wrote a little bit of it, I say just a little bit because Quentin is the author. We'd smoke a cigar in the evening and talk and talk and talk and a week later there's a rewrite and it has that conversation in it. I talk endlessly. Basically I'm doing the Samuel L Jackson part in this movie. I'm just talking my head off, in between killing people". He also spilled on one piece of luck he had it seems at the end of the movie, "I can't tell you too much about it, but there's a long sequence between Uma and me that is like a love scene, except at the end of it we have a fight. That's probably the sweetest moment". The report also mentions a recent rumour that 'Bill' will actually be split into two movies, although a Miramax exec has debunked that but says it "will be one movie but presented in 'three distinct segments'". Thanks to 'MG'.

A short report from the final days of filming on the Tarantino flick from scooper 'Dredge': "Kill Bill has been filming in Careyes, Jalisco (south of Puerto Vallarta) for a few days after which principal photography should wrap. They've been filming in a shabby local bar (the kind where the watiresses/waiters are also available.) and have hired a number of people from a nearby pueblo as extras, one of which told me she was making 500 pesos a day, equivalent to about 50 US dollars, real good money here where the minimum wage is 35 pesos a day".

Monkey Peaches has posted up a description of the first trailer and it sounds quite spectacular. Here's just a sampling: "We get a crane shot. It starts at eye level on Uma and it slowly raises to the rafters so that we can see that there are something like 25 bad guys surrounding her, all with swords drawn. Uma then raises her sword, indicating she’s ready for’em. Pause. She makes one tiny, defiant movement and (now back to the crane shot where we can see everyone from above) the whole circle of bad guys literally take a synchronized, fearful step back. It’s sooooooo cool. Anyway, moving on…the screen goes black and once again we get big, red block letters but this time they read: "IN THE YEAR". Fade out to someone with blonde hair (pretty sure it’s Hannah again) doing a flying kick. Cut to: "2003". Fade out to an axe flung end over end that whizzes by Uma’s head. Cut to: "UMA THURMAN". Fade out to Uma doing some sort of flip. "WILL". Fade out to more martial art swordplay but now in silhouette. Cut to: "KILL BILL". Fade out to a profile shot of Lucy Liu; she says, "You didn’t think it was going to be that easy, did you?" It then cuts to a profile shot of Uma who responds with, "You know…for a second there, I kind of did." And for the last shot we cut to Uma running up the banister of a staircase to intercept a bad guy with her sword". Thanks to 'Sebastian'.

Quentin Tarantino traveled to Beijing in early March to prep for shooting on "Kill Bill" where he exclusively talked with Beijing Youth, and now a transcript is up at Monkey Peaches. Amongst the new highlights is that the film will be spead across four countries - China, Japan, Mexico and America as Uma's character travels around the world to kill the five men who've traumatized her. About the script, QT says: "For an average script, you must first imagine what the action scene is then you shoot it. But my script is different. In my script, you can see all the actions. In my script. action and fight scenes alone occupy 22 pages, which has cost me a whole year to write. This is the hardest thing I have ever done in my life. I not only had to make it better but also had to design each move as well as the momentum and the strength among the words. Each sentence must show feelings and strengths. I just wrote and re-wrote, for a whole year. Just like this, the script has gradually been enriched and become more complete. I first wrote it section by section. If it was too hard to come out connections between sections, I just left them blank and went to watch Hong Kong movies, watch Japanese samurai movies, to look for inspirations to fill my script. This process is painful and long. The final product is something totally original and something of my own". Thanks to 'Ye Meng'

- 17th October 2002 -
WENN talked with Quentin Tarantino who confirmed star Uma Thurman will be wearing the actual yellow tracksuit worn by Bruce Lee in his last film - "Game of Death".  Tarantino says "It was exciting, writing and thinking of Uma's physicality, those long lanky legs and that blonde hair, and her doing animal-style kung fu or using the samurai-style sword". Quentin also talks about his upcoming career prospects: "Most directors have a 40-year career. There's that first great 20 years, and the second 20 years, which isn't half as great. There are good movies in that last half, but also a lot of apologizing - and I want to avoid those last 20 years. I don't want to be too much of a professional, I want to keep my amateur status". Thanks to 'murph'.

- 13th July 2001 -

- 7th November 2000 -
Popcorn managed to grab a chat with Tarantino at the "Little Nicky" premiere and asked him about his Uma Thurman-starring "Kill Bill" project. He mentioned he came up with the idea after "Pulp Fiction", wrote 30 pages of it and locked that away and now seven years later the "balls-to-the-wall, violent revenge movie" is finished. Thurman says of the project - "It's a very risqué movie, a female revenge film. I think Quentin's going to up the ante in his creativity and madness. I've just been hearing it as he's been writing it. It sounds extremely exciting but extremely frightening. It'll be the wildest thing that I'll have ever done!". Tarantino neither confirmed or denied rumours that Warren Beatty may be involved in a small role. Thanks to 'Lisa'.
