Following its critical and box-office success, a sequel to Patty Jenkins’ “Wonder Woman” is inevitable and so is the likelihood it will be another period piece tale set sometime during the 20th century.
The most popular guess has been the second World War, even though it would seem like effectively re-treading old ground seen in the first film’s WWI setting. A new rumor posted at Screen Rant suggests a much more interesting idea – a 1980s period piece which will pit Diana (Gal Gadot) against the forces of Soviet Union in the closing days of the Cold War.
The site says according to their sources the production team is expected to remain on board for the sequel, with Geoff Johns developing the script with the still in negotiations Patty Jenkins. The big surprise though of the report? That Chris Pine will apparently be returning as Diana’s ally Steve Trevor. How that’s possible is the obvious big question going forward.
Jenkins has previously stated the next film should at least partly be set in America. If the report is true, the switching out of a Greek myth meets war movie with a Cold War spy thriller could prove an interesting one.
