12 Years a Slave Display Draws Controversy

British supermarket chain Sainsbury’s has had to apologise for what’s being described as a “tasteless” recent in-store display promoting the DVD and Blu-ray release of “12 Years a Slave”. It wasn’t the discs that raised eyebrows though, nor the use of the terminology “Own It Now” on a film about a slave.

Rather, it was a headless mannequin standing next to it dressed in the same costume as the film’s main character Solomon Northup – the juxtaposition suggesting that maybe you could “buy Solomon’s look” in store as well.

A shopper at the Oxford store posted a photo online which immediately went viral on social media and led to both public complaints and several stories in the British media.

The store has since said in a statement through its PR account that “It’s been taken down from the store and clearly should never have gone up in the first place.”
