The return of “The X-Files” on FOX proved a ratings smash for the network with the premiere episode pulling in a 5.1 rating and around 13.5 million viewers in Live+Same Day figures. That figure is pretty much on par with the series finale back in 2002, but in the way the TV landscape has since changed that is considered a very strong number.
It’s a good sign for FOX considering the absolute bashing the episode took with critics with the show scoring just a 58/100 on Metacritic. Heavily panned for its clunky scripting, stilted acting, mess of a plot and inconsistent retconning, reviews have only been tempered by critics clarifying that the next two subsequent episodes improve considerably. The network has also released a trailer for the second episode which airs tonight.
