One new and one old face are joining the cast of AMC’s “The Walking Dead” for its third season.
* MINOR SPOILERS AHEAD *
The second season finale, which just aired States-side last night, saw the cameo of a mysterious katana-wielding hooded figure whom we never saw the identity of.
Now, AMC has confirmed that the figure is Michonne, a female character from the comic books who looks like she’ll be introduced earlier into the narrative than she was in the comics.
The network also confirmed Michonne will be played by Danai Gurira (“The Visitor,” “Ghost Town,” HBO’s “Treme”) in the third season. The news comes a month after David Morrissey was announced as playing The Governor, an antagonist whom Michonne has a big connection with in the comics.
Meanwhile, Michael Rooker confirmed at WonderCon over the weekend that he will be back as Merle Dixon. Merle, the brother of Norman Reedus’ Daryl, was left for dead at the start of the first season.
Rooker says he’s lost 20 pounds to return as Merle, a proper return as well – not just as appearing as a hallucination like his guest-starring spot in an episode this past season.
Shooting on the extended sixteen-episode third season kicks off this May in Atlanta ahead of a debut sometime in October.
