Major news on the “Star Wars” front.
THR reports that Lucasfilm is making a deal with “Looper” and “Brick” writer-director Rian Johnson to both pen and direct “Star Wars: Episode VIII” and to write a treatment for “Star Wars: Episode IX”.
Johnson would essentially take over from J.J. Abrams who is currently helming “Star Wars: Episode VII” and is laying the foundation for the new trilogy.
Johnson would then run with it at the helm of the next outing. Whether he’ll direct “Star Wars: Episode IX” as well is unclear at this point, despite reports just a few minutes ago saying the contrary.
It’s also not clear, but almost a certainty, that Abrams will remain onboard as producer for the other two films in the trilogy – much like he did with the fourth “Mission: Impossible” after he directed the third one.
Neither Disney or Lucasfilm have officially confirmed the news yet, but an announcement is expected shortly.
