Doing even better than lofty expectations, Warner Brothers’ “The LEGO Movie” pulled in an estimated $69.1 million at the U.S. box-office in its first weekend.
Made for a tight $60 million, the film is already a big success story for the studio and a guaranteed sequel generator helped also by great reviews and word of mouth.
George Clooney’s “The Monuments Men” also performed well with a $22.7 million opening, older audiences skewing towards the film while families and youngsters opted for LEGO action. Cop comedy “Ride Along” came in third with $9.3 million and crossed the $100 million mark this weekend, continuing its sleeper hit status.
Despite a big fan base, the film adaptation of the popular “Vampire Academy” novels was a disaster and earned just $4.1 million to come in seventh place, essentially joining the likes of “The Mortal Instruments” and “Beautiful Creatures” as another failed YA franchise.
On the limited release front, Ben Wheatley’s trippy and under promoted “A Field in England” did a miserable $500 per screen average across ten screens.
