Pre-release tracking figures for Alfonso Cuaron’s 3D space epic “Gravity” suggest the film could open to a $35-40 million domestic opening weekend when it hits next weekend.
Warner Bros. have said they would be happy with anything above $30 million. Those numbers are good considering October openings of major adult-oriented films are usually fairly soft.
“The Departed” opened in the same slot in 2006 to $26.9 million, while “The Social Network” scored $22.4 million. In this case, the 3D & IMAX upcharges are expected to provide a boost.
