The numbers are in and the “Godzilla” reboot pulled in $93 million at the U.S. box-office this weekend, the second biggest opening weekend of the year and only a fraction behind “Captain America: The Winter Soldier” which generated $95 million.
It was a very good weekend for the big beastie all around as it not only scored the biggest opening day of the year, with $38.5 million on Friday, but it chalked up a further $103 million million overseas this weekend. That makes it the biggest international opening of the year, helped along by impressive 3D and IMAX numbers.
The R-rated comedy “Neighbors” dropped 47% to post a still very strong $26 million second weekend haul. The movie currently stands at $91 million domestically and half as much again internationally.
Disney’s Jon Hamm-led “Million Dollar Arm” also opened this week and came in fourth with a respectable $10.5 million, while in limited release “The Immigrant” scored a healthy $15,133 per screen average whilst “Chinese Puzzle” wasn’t far behind with $12,100 per screen.
