In the space of a week, Universal and Focus Features’ trailer for the upcoming film adaptation of E.L. James’ erotic best-seller “Fifty Shades of Grey” has become the biggest online trailer launch in history.
After teases on NBC’s today and Beyonce’s Instagram feed, the trailer launched to 100 million views across all platforms in a week. 19.3 million of those belonged to Universal’s UK Youtube channel, 13 million to the U.S. channel, 40 million on Facebook across the studio’s domestic and international channels, and the rest to other affiliates, official outlets (Yahoo, IMDb, Apple, etc.) and movie fan channels.
On launch day, the trailer garnered 98,000 mentions per hour on Twitter and was the No. 1 Google-trending topic in the U.S., Canada, the UK, France, and Germany.
