“The Expendables 3” pulled in around $875,000 at the box office for Thursday night previews. Those numbers are almost exactly on par with the $870,000 from the first film’s Thursday night screenings.
It’s better than the $685,000 the second film scored, but that film only had midnight shows whereas “The Expendables 3” started at 7pm. Estimates are the new film will pull in $23-25 million.
The film adaptation of Lois Lowry’s young adult novel “The Giver” opened to $750,000 in preview screenings last night as well, and is on track for a $15 million opening weekend.
Both films are going head to head this weekend with the R-rated comedy “Let’s Be Cops” which opened on Wednesday and pulled in $8.4 million through that period and is expected to score $20 million over the next three days.
Reviews for all three have not been good. On Metacritic, “Let’s Be Cops” sits at 28/100, “The Expendables” is at 36/100 (compared to 45 & 51 for the first two), and “The Giver” is at 46/100.
