The North American home entertainment debut of the “Despicable Me” sequel has generated $80 million in consumer spending across both physical and digital sell-through formats in its first week of release.
Approximately four-and-a-half million units were sold, making it the biggest animated title launch since the first film’s home vid release in 2010.
It also scored the highest sales for any animated Blu-ray title in history in its opening week, and the largest digital first week sales on record – to the point that it is on track to become the most successful-selling digital title of all time.
The success comes on top of the $918 million the film raked in at the worldwide box-office. Craig Kornblau, president of Universal Studios Home Entertainment, says:
“Despicable Me 2’s astonishing results across both packaged media and digital underscores the resounding demand among consumers of all ages to have instant access to the film anytime, anywhere and cements it as one of the greatest must-own movies ever.”
