The second film in Peter Jackson’s “The Hobbit” trilogy, ‘The Desolation of Smaug’, is expected to earn around $80 million in its North American debut this weekend.
That would put it just a tiny bit shy of last year’s “The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey” which opened to $84.6 million in the United States.
Though ‘Smaug’ will open in 49 territories this weekend, it is opening in fewer territories day-and-date with the United States with countries like Japan and Australia not getting it for a while yet. As a result the $139 million international debut of the first film is unlikely to be matched.
